The Bike: 2025 Honda XR150L
Engine149cc air-cooled SOHC single, 22mm carburetor, 9.5:1 compression, 5-speed, 17T/49T sprockets
Power~12 hp claimed at crank; ~10.8 hp measured at rear wheel (sea level)
Fuel tank10.6 L (2.8 gal)
Fuel economy~30–34 km/L typical (70–80 mpg) → ~300 km range; carry the bladder past 220 km without a Pemex
Engine oilSAE 10W-30, API SJ+, JASO MA. Capacity 1.0 L at change (1.2 L after rebuild). Burns oil — CHECK LEVEL EVERY GAS STOP
Curb weight128–129 kg (282–284 lb), full tank
Max weight capacity155 kg (341 lb) — rider + all gear + accessories, per Honda service manual
Tire pressure22 psi front + rear up to 90 kg load; 29 psi at maximum weight capacity
Top speed~105–110 km/h solo at sea level; loaded + altitude cuts this hard

Load budget (155 kg cap)

Margin, 75 kg rider aboard−12 kg OVER+5 kg+11 kg+47 kg

Read that MAX column honestly: with Mav's 75 kg aboard, the full MAX build is ~12 kg OVER Honda's rated capacity before adding fuel in the Rotopax, water, or food. The bike will still move — Mexican XR150s haul families of four — but brakes, suspension, bearings, and tire ratings are past spec. Ride it like it's overloaded, because it is.

Altitude vs power (~10% lost per 1,000 m)

AltitudeHPRealistic cruise, loaded
Sea level (coast, Sonora lowlands)~1285–95 km/h
1,000 m~10.875–85 km/h
1,500 m (foothills)~10.270–80 km/h
2,000 m (sierra towns)~9.760–70 km/h
2,500 m (Creel, high passes)~9.150–65 km/h; steep grades 2nd–3rd gear at 30–40
3,000 m (highest crossings)~8.645–55 km/h; plan double time on climbs

Cruise speeds assume MED-level load. MAX load or headwind: subtract another 5–10 km/h. The carb runs richer up high — expect rougher idle and worse fuel economy above 2,000 m.

Loading Map: What Goes Where

Full MAX build — on lighter tiers, skipped items just stay home.

On your body THE LIFELINE
The fanny pack: wallet (spare microSD cards live inside it) · keys · iPhone (satellite SOS rides ON you, not in luggage) · chapstick · pen · PASSPORT (original on body; the waterproof case in luggage holds the copies) · plus Apple Watch and one cash stash.
Under-seat compartment THE SAFE
Backup phone · second cash stash · decoy AirTag findable near here; main AirTag buried somewhere only you know (headlight bucket, inside rear fender).
Gas tank top pack THE STUDIO
The valuables vault, always under your eyes: drone (inside its case) + controller · 360 cameras · action cameras · battery chargers for all three · spare batteries in rotation · lithium jump starter (doubles as the power bank) · Bluetooth remotes · laminated whiteboard flat under the lid. One motion off the bike and it walks into every taco stand with you.
Handlebar bag THE GLOVEBOX
Headlight · compass · multitool · several dry erase Expo markers · spare pen. Free space stays free.
RAM rack crossbar THE FILM RIG
Tripod strapped flat along the bar · selfie stick RAM-mounted in active use · dead space put to work — fastest camera access on the bike.
Crash bar bag, left THE AIRBAG, LEFT
Soft crushables ONLY — crash bars hit the ground first: all 4 spare tubes in a strong nylon bag · jacket · sweater · gloves · mittens · camp sandals.
Crash bar bag, right THE AIRBAG, RIGHT
Soft crushables ONLY: rain gear · waterproof fluorescent coat (rain hits, one zipper away) · rain pants · water bottles · hiking boots · spare goggles.
Tool tubes at rear signals SOLDER TUBE (L) + GLUE TUBE (R)
Lightweight only, up high. LEFT — the electrical magazine: soldering iron + solder · spare wire · spare fuses · spare bulbs · backup brake light. RIGHT — the adhesives magazine: rubber cement · JB Weld · Loctite · grease tube.
Bottom tube, non-exhaust side THE FLUIDS MAGAZINE
Under the tool box: engine oil mini bottle · carb cleaner · chain lube · WD-40 · spare spark plug + 16mm socket · manual air pump (too long for the top tube).
Bottom tube, exhaust side THE PARTS MAGAZINE
Heat-proof metal only, counterweighting the tool box: tire irons + no-pinch iron · full spare chain + front sprocket · spare bolts + nuts · spare brake pads · spare clutch + throttle cables · spare levers · safety wire coil.
Tool box in rack square (lock + key) EL TALLER
ALL the important metal tools live behind the lock: electric air pump · patch kit · C clamp · spray top · valve core tool + cores · chain toolkit + master links · wrenches 8–19mm · allen keys · crescent ×2 · pliers, vise grips, needle nose · JIS screwdrivers · sockets + ratchets + extensions + u-joint + adapters · tap + die · zip ties · tape rolls · siphon hose · small multimeter · hose clamps · degreaser handwash · engine oil 1qt (if it fits) · bearing toolkit + spare bearings · folding saw · folding shovel · tweezers, scissors, utility knife.

Top duffles on side bags THE KITCHEN LOFT + FREE SPACE
ALL the cooking gear, moved forward off the tail: stove · cookware · mini utensils · plates · egg case · spices + olive oil · containers · both propane canisters · propane torch + bottle + adapter · lighter · plus spare RAM parts. Remaining space stays free — rule 6.
Tail box side bags (both sides) THE PANTRY (cooler: EL REFRI)
Food side, with the mini hiking cooler attached and secured to the tail box side (takes ice, keeps food cold). The former kitchen side now rides empty — bonus free space, or leave that bag home on lighter trips.
45L tail box (lockable) MISSION CONTROL
The power + office vault: solar panel · MacBook · paperwork · GRECELL T-300 · USB cords · extension cord · chargers · USB flash drives · overflow spare camera batteries · 12V tools (MAX trips only) · 1–2 spare selfie sticks · SPARE DRONE · paper. STARLINK MINI lives strapped under the lid: the aluminum lid has a square cutout sized to the Mini, covered in plexiglass — the dish sees the sky through its own skylight without ever being unpacked. Rotopax bolted to the front face · ratchet strap + bungees under the lid · mini backpack folded flat: at restaurants it becomes the stealth charging rig (power station + electronics inside, one extension cord out — one wire showing, zero devices on display).
Hiking backpack (backrest) THE GO-BAG
Rests against the Rotopax on the tail box front, held by the saddlery belt. FIRST AID KIT + all toiletries in the zipped compartments · ALL CLOTHES packed inside a waterproof bag · water bottles · wet wipes.

The six rules behind the map

  1. Heavy and dense rides LOW and CENTRAL — fluids, tools, spares live in the tubes, tool box, and bag bottoms, never in the tail box up high.
  2. LEFT/RIGHT balance — camp side vs kitchen side weigh roughly the same.
  3. The 60-SECOND rule — rain gear, first aid, pumps, and tow strap reachable without unpacking.
  4. Valuables LOCK (tail box) or ride ON YOU — never in soft bags.
  5. One job, one place — the entire flat kit lives in one bag, so at a flat you grab ONE bag, not five.
  6. LEAVE ROOM — the road always hands you miscellaneous (market fruit, souvenirs, a gift from a ranchero), and a bike packed to 100% has nowhere to put it.
